“There are so many people in the third world suffering so horribly right now, and we are so focused on ourselves and our culture that a lot of things are showing up that are making it impossible for us to focus on others.”
                                  Martin Sheen(1940-  ) American actor
“A lot of things are showing up…!” And I’m sure they’ll keep showing up.

I try to keep in mind as I put together these weekly musings that the challenges I talk about here — dealing with lives that are too busy and so easily sidetracked by too many choices; keeping ourselves focused, awake, and prioritized in a distracted and abundant world, and so on, I try to keep a perspective — to remember that these are the challenges of the fortunate, and that we are constantly at risk of being solely “focused on ourselves…”

…while so many people, here and around the world, are “suffering so horribly.” Wouldn’t they love to have our challenges!
And yet, as Nelson Mandela reminded us, “There is no passion to be found in playing small — in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
Thoughts for your quiet moments this week.
