Make no mistake, being all alone and still are states that our culture neither values nor encourages. Rather, it seems to do all it can to help us avoid them.
I really don’t think that this (silence/solitude) is optional ‒ simply something that, if you’re so inclined, is nice to do. No, I believe it is essential for spiritual and emotional health.
Why? Because only some degree of solitude and silence allows you to access your inner knowledge (the presence of God, wisdom, grace, understanding, call it what you will). Constant busyness, noise, chatter, distraction ‒ they all drown it out.
Your solitude and silence needn’t be overly long nor arduous. Simply put some spaces in your week when you are peacefully still and quiet and alone ‒ even if lots of people and bustle are going on near-by, which you can return to soon enough.
Seek it. Create it for yourself. And, of course, don’t forget to breathe!
